The Wand Target

CREATING THE TARGETRY FOR THE WAND SHOOT

THE TARGET AND SCORING AREA

THE TARGET IS A PLANK OF WOOD 6 FEET LONG, BY 4 INCHES WIDE, BY 1 INCH THICK.
THE PLANK HAS A CUT AWAY SECTION AT THE BOTTOM TO LET IT SLIDE INTO THE STEEL CHANNEL.

WHICH GIVES YOU A TARGET OF, 6 FOOT TALL OVERALL, AND A TARGET AREA SIZE OF 39 INCHES BY 4 INCHES WIDE BY 5 INCHES DEEP.

The wand target face as presented to the archer. The left side non-scoring area. The right side non-scoring area. The foam is held in place with industrial strength cling film.

Block and board keeping target face in place.Board and block keeping the target foam in place.

The wand stand.Hard board behind the first layers of foam.

THE TARGET FACE AND SCORING AREA

HITTING A PLANK OF WOOD IS NOT THE BEST IDEA FOR WOODEN OR ANY TYPE OF MODERN ARROW, SO IT WAS DECIDED TO COVER THE FRONT WITH SOMETHING TO SOFTEN THE BLOW.

THE WOODEN PLANK HAS A FOAM TARGET BUILT ONTO THE TOP 39 INCHES, SUPPORTED BY A SMALL SQUARE PIECE OF BOARD AND A BLOCK OF WOOD, THIS IS TO STOP THE TARGET FOAM FROM SLIPPING DOWN AND OUT OF POSITION THROUGH HANDLING.

ALSO HARD BOARD IS PLACED OUT OF SITE BEHIND THE FIRST LAYER OF FOAM, THIS IS THE FIRST SLOW DOWN FOR THE ARROW, ( IT ALSO GIVES THE FACE OF THE TARGET A GOOD SQUARE EVEN LOOK)

AS THE PRESSURE OF THE ARROW IS FELT IN THE HARD BOARD AND FOAM IT IS IMMEDIATELY TRANSFERRED INTO THE PLANK OF WOOD WHICH IS PROPELLED BACKWARDS, THERE IS ENOUGH FORCE HERE TO LIFT OR LEVER THE STEEL BASE OFF THE GROUND, AT THE FRONT, THUS TAKING THE IMPACT OUT OF THE ARROW, THE WEIGHT OF THE BASE MADE OF 2 INCH ANGLE IRON WILL SET THE TARGET BACK DOWN IN THE SAME PLACE WHERE IT STARTED FROM.

THIS LEVER ACTION IS ASSISTED BY TWO EVENLY SPACED STEEL PINS TO THE REAR OF THE BASE OR FOOT PLATE.

THESE STEEL PINS ARE NOT THERE TO PIN THE BASE DOWN BUT TO STOP IT MOVING BACKWARDS.

The scoring area on the target is 4 inches by 39 inches.A good hit.Five out of five scoring arrows.

A good central hit.A scoring arrow as it has hit the face of the target.Scoring arrow line-cutter.

Scoring arrow on the target face.Any arrow that misses the target face is a miss.

Missed, hit the supporting block.Supporting block is a miss.

Side shot is a miss.Non scoring arrow.

THE BASE FOR THE WAND

THE BASE FOR THE WAND IS MADE FROM 2 INCH ANGLE IRON, THE SECTIONS ARE CUT AT 2 FEET LONG AND WELDED TOGETHER SO AS TO CREATE A RECTANGLE, THE UP RIGHT SECTION IS MADE FROM 4 INCH CHANNEL AND IS 1 FOOT HIGH, AND THE LITTLE STRIP ACROSS THE TOP TO HOLD THE TOP WEDGE IS 1 INCH STRIP IRON.

THE WAND IS HELD IN PLACE BY 2 WEDGES, A LONG ONE IN THE TOP, AND A SHORT ONE IN THE BOTTOM, THE SHORT ONE IN THE BOTTOM ALLOWS THE WAND TO BE SET UP IN A HALL OR HARD STANDING.

THE BASE SHOULD NOT BE PINNED TO THE GROUND, BUT MAYBE SUPPORTED AT THE REAR, BY TWO PINS, WHICH WILL STILL ALLOW THE UNIQUE LEVER ACTION , OF THE WAND, TO DO IT`S JOB OF SLOWING THE ARROW DOWN, WITHOUT GETTING SERIOUS PENETRATION OF THE BACKING PLANK, AND LOSS OF PILES AND ARROW DAMAGE.

The wand base. The base is rectangular 24 x 28 inches. The channel to hold the wand is a foot high.

Overall length of the base is 28 inches. The overall width of the base is two feet.

The channel girder is four inches wide and one foot long. The channel is fitted with a one inch wide bar at the top.

The lower part of the wand should be cut from 4 inches wide to around 3 inches wide to fit the channel without sticking. The bottom of the wand, the base and the two wedges ready to assemble. The wand is held in place by two wedges.

The shorter wedge goes at the bottom and the other at the top.The base should be supported from behind with two steel pins to prevent it moving backwards.

The base should not be held down with steel pins.

THERE WILL BE A WAY OF PURCHASING THESE WANDS THROUGH ARCHERS OF THE TEES WE ARE JUST WAITING ON A PRICE PLUS CARRIAGE.

THE STEEL BASE FOR THE WAND WILL NOT BE FOR SALE UNLESS YOU ORDER IT AND PICK IT UP YOURSELF, AS AT OUR PRICES YOU COULD PROBABLY GET TWO OR THREE MADE LOCALLY FOR THE PRICE OF THE POSTAGE.
